about

Gareth Sager & The Hungry Ghosts are set to release a new EP on the Creeping Bent label on the 26th of June 2019.

The EP features ‘St. Jock’, the third track to be lifted from The Pop Group and Rip Rig & Panic founder’s current and acclaimed album ‘Juicy Rivers’, alongside 'Going Rogue' and 'Swamp Dog Stomp', two new unreleased tracks.

Revealing the inspiration for ‘St. Jock’, one of the album’s most anthemic and infectious moments, Sager reveals a song intended as a candid and open-ended dedication:

‘St. Jock isn't directly a homage to Jock Scot though does try to express his spirit in the sense that he was very honest about his failings, which appeared to occur much more than his successes; like most of us! Though there is a reference to a girlfriend of his whose favourite past time was to tile! Apart from that the song contains the most difficult first line to sing ever: “She wears a white, red wine stained smock”.

In their recent four star review of ‘Juicy Rivers’, MOJO identified a record that boasts ‘a spiffing OG Caledonian art-punk vibe’ singling out ‘St Jock’ as “an expansive lament for late poet Jock Scot” that recalls the output of legendary Scottish independent Postcard as well as “that scene’s soulful spiritual icon Vic Godard”.

‘Juicy Rivers’ is the final instalment of the ‘Creeping Bent Triptych’ and also features the singles ‘Come Share in My World’ and ‘Disco Sofa’ amongst it’s ten track collection of new avant-punk / funk and fury.

Gareth Sager is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer from Edinburgh and the founding member of post-punk provocateurs The Pop Group, avant-garde jazz / art pop collective Rip Rig & Panic and the unruly Bristol-rooted rock group Head. An industrious collaborator and a prolific solo artist in his own right, Sager has been an unremittingly restless and versatile force in the post-punk era and beyond, throughout a dynamic career of confounding originality.

As a vital presence, both in The Pop Group’s original incarnation and in their subsequent reformation, Sager remains a principal foundation in one of post-punk’s most relentlessly evolutionary and antagonistic groups. His uninhibited approach to instrumentation as a lifelong pianist, guitarist, saxophonist and clarinetist as well as his astute use of electronics in recent material continues to inspirit the bands momentous radicalism.

Gareth Sager & The Hungry Ghosts line up of Ian Holford (drums - The Nectarine No9 / Sexual Objects) and Dan Connolly (bass) recently played their first live show together at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow and are set to announce further live dates in the very near future.
